Silent Night in Open Voicing

Open Voicing arrangement is when you play the chords with the chords spread across multiple octaves and usually divided between the two hands. The following is an attempt to play the Silent Night

I am learning the open voicing arrangement and the following recording uses a very basic open voicing arrangement. The left hand playing the root note and the fifth notes while the right hand played the third and the melody note above it.

There had been exceptions though primarily because of constraints. The left hand played an Octave for the root note(instead of root and fifth) during the last G chord. This was because the chord had to be played down to avoid clash with the melody in the right hand and the root and the fifth there was creating a not so pleasing sound. Also, for the right hand, only the melody note is played if the melody note itself was the third of the chord.

Please refer the song page Silent Night for more information on the song. To know more about the Piano Techniques used, please refer the Techniques page.

The Tennessee Waltz

The attempt is to play the Tennessee Waltz on Piano. This rendition uses various different techniques and accompaniment patterns.

The following are the techniques I have used for this rendition:

  1. Using an introduction which are in fact final phrases of the song
  2. Right Hand playing melody with single finger
  3. Right Hand playing melody in Octave hand position (along with different techniques like adding more fingers to notes in the position)
  4. Left Hand playing Arpeggio
  5. Left Hand playing Oom-pah-pah
  6. 10th Chord Arpeggio
  7. Ending the song with a grand arpeggio

A Bicycle Built For Two - Swing Bass/Oom Pah

The following is an attempt to play 'The Bicycle Built For Two' (also known as 'Daisy, Daisy') using the Swing Bass (also known as 'Oom pah') style.

Like Silent Night, this song is also on Waltz rhythm (3/4) and is a slow song. The slowness of the Waltz song is what makes them beautiful. The basic oom-pah pattern for 3/4 songs is 'oom-pah-pah' where 'oom' is where we strike the bass note (or notes in case of octaves) and 'pah' is where we strike the chord notes.

Silent Night With Blocked Chords

This is the first post. The attempt is to play the Silent Night on Piano using the Blocked Chords & Single Finger Melody.

I have tried to play the song as slow as possible as Silent Night should be as silent as possible. The notes of the song are really spaced out and should ideally be a calm and soft song.

Please refer the song page Silent Night for more information on the song. To know more about the Piano Techniques used, please refer the Techniques page.
